i've been tagged!

I’ve been tagged by the lovely and captivating Tara of Nothing Elegant (one of my favourite blogs, which you should all go visit if you haven’t already).

Now I must answer these questions and tag others, which is really kinda neat. I feel like I’m being interviewed for a magazine or something :)
here goes…

What is your current obsession?
Well, I’ve a collection of obsessions that are chronic and everlasting, such as Elvis, my husband, grape crush and red shoes. But my most dominant obsession as of late has been the desire to quit my job and move someplace breathtakingly beautiful in the middle of bleedin’ nowhere, where I can grow my own veggies and bathe in a nearby spring :)

What is your weirdest obsession? Singin’ songs about my dog :)

What are you wearing today? Jeans, a striped T-shirt and red mary janes. You caught me on a boring day. I suppose I could have lied.

What’s for dinner? Somethin’ good, no doubt. My husband handles most (ok, pretty much all) of the cuisine, because he loves to cook and he’s ridonkulously good at it. His specialty is chicken breast stuffed with asparagus and havarti and wrapped in bacon. Yummmmmy :P

What’s the last thing you bought? On any given day, if you ask me this question, chances are the answer’s either smokes or wine. I ain’t gonna lie to ya.

What do you think about the person who tagged you? I think she seems like just the sort of person I would get along famously with! She’s eloquent and interesting and has impeccable taste, and if she ever finds herself in Toronto Ontario she should pop in for tea!

If you could have a house totally paid for, fully furnished anywhere in the world, where would you like it to be? Oooh, that’s a toughie… Darjeeling perhaps? Or maybe Bhutan? Somewhere in the cradle of the Himalayas. They don’t call it Shangri-La for nothin’.

What are your must-have pieces for summer? sundresses, cardigans and little slip on flats. (I hate shorts and I'm tall enough as it is.)

If you could go anywhere in the world for the next hour, where would you go? All I got’s an hour? I wanna go to Dharamsala and have a cup o’ tea with the Dalai Lama then.

Which language do you want to learn?
Spanish. No, Mandarin. No, German. I love languages. How about Spandermandarin? :D

What’s your favourite quote?
“There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.” – Leonard Cohen

Who do you want to meet right now? Morrissey.

What is your favourite colour? Red for shoes, nailpolish and rooftops. Blue for dresses, eye shadow and acoustic guitars, and green for coats, tea and el caminos.

What is your favourite piece of clothing in your own closet?
Lately I’d have to say the floor length Victorian nightie my aunt sent me from England. It’s so comfortable and romantic, and my husband and I giggle every time I wear it, cuz I pretend I'm holding an old lantern and holler “who dares disturb my slumber?” and other such old timey things.

What is your dream job? I’d like to get paid for daydreams and finger-paintings.

What’s your favourite magazine? Juxtapoz, although I can’t remember the last time I read it. Blogs are my new mags.

If you had $100 now, what would you spend it on? This dress from The Red Dress Shoppe :
What do you consider a fashion faux pas? Crocks (blegh). Uggs (ick). Whale tails (ew).

Who are your style icons?
Dita Von Teese. I love the way she floats from elegant to raunchy and right back to elegant again with such ease.

Natalie Wood. She had such a clever sweetness about her. Sweetness with a dash of spunk.

Ideally, I'd like to be somewhere in between the two :)

Describe your personal style. My style is pretty much all over the place, depending on my mood. I definitely like to incorporate humour and a little nostalgia into the way I dress. A pinch of irony is always good too. Sometimes I think I dress like a children’s entertainer. I could probably do with a tad more elegance and a tad less ha ha.

What are you going to do after this?
Laundry. (boo).

What are your favourite movies?
I studied film for seven years and got two degrees for it, but wouldn’t you know, I still can’t answer that bloody question :D

What are three cosmetic/makeup/perfume products that you can't live without? I’m a pretty low maintenance broad when it comes to the daily grind. I do like to play with make-up when I’m doing something special, but on a regular day I wear cover-up, lip gloss and chesnut brown eyeliner. That’s it, that’s all.

What inspires you?
Truth and beauty.

Give us three styling tips that always work for you:
1. Play lots of dress-up in your closet. Mixing things you never thought to wear together can become your favourite outfits!
2. Learn your body shape, and what cuts and fabrics flatter you most.
3. Red shoes go with anything and everything :)

What do you do when you “have nothing to wear” (even though your closet’s packed)?
First I pout and huff about for a bit, and then I throw on one of my husband’s big cashmere sweaters and a pair of jeans.

What are you reading right now?
I'm reading Clearcut by Nina Sengold. So far so good.

**The rules are: Respond and rework – answer the questions on your own blog, replace one question that you dislike with a question of your own invention, and add one more question of your own. Then tag eight other people. I'll tag eight of my favorites: dear golden, q's daydream ennui, blue moss, vintage rose clothing, daydream lily, frances baker, johanna ost

travel the world without leaving your desk

this morning i stumbled upon an interesting interview at Inside Out with photographer Cyril Genty of Un Jour A Paris, where he posts daily photos of the city in which he lives. browsing through Genty's photos is like strolling through the streets of Paris, not as a tourist but as a local. having thoroughly enjoyed my virtual Parisian jaunt, i decided to see where else i could visit from the comfort of my desktop...
much to my delight, i found this: a directory of daily photo blogs from all across the planet, categorized by city. everything from...

Abu Dhabi...

...to Zurich.
there are hundreds of cities you can travel to! i am really looking forward to wandering through the alphabet :)

moody monday

i'm feeling a bit mucky this morning. sort of like a pig in sh*t who isn't as happy as it should be. i'm well aware of the root cause: inertia. an object at rest tends to stay at rest. i've spent far too much time lying around in the cool, soothing mud, becoming increasingly plump and increasingly banal, when i should be out sniffing for truffles! i must get my proverbial poop together, and quickly.
in the meantime, here are some beautiful and moody photos by the talented Daniel Douglas...

video vendredi - i will give you everything

my husband and i got to talking about this Skydiggers song this morning. bit of a blast from the past.
really beautiful song.
hope you enjoy it.
have a magnificent weekend!

the poison garden

i stumbled upon this neat feature at the New York Times about author Amy Stewart and her marvelous living space. she and her husband, who runs an antiquarian book store, live in this gorgeous victorian home:

even more interesting, however, are the gardens they tend. Amy has created a "writer's garden" complete with writing desk and planted books.
oh and one more thing: every one of the 30 varieties of plants in this garden are poisonous. that's right.
